Indigenous Knowledge Advancing Nature-based Solutions to Climate Change

Through project partnerships, knowledge exchange, and an emerging community of practice, Climate Resilient by Nature seeks to better understand and promote the critical role of indigenous protected and locally managed areas across the Indo-Pacific in enabling nature-based solutions to climate change.

More than one-third of the world’s key biodiversity areas are found within the territories of indigenous people and local communities. 91% of those lands are in good or fair ecological condition.

Around the world, indigenous people and local communities are advancing nature-based solutions through the sustainable management of their territories and exercising traditional knowledge and cultural authority.

In Australia, organisations like Girringun Aboriginal Corporation are leading the way in enhancing Indigenous leadership in natural and cultural resource management and the revitalisation of traditional environmental knowledge.

The Girringun Indigenous Protected Area (GIPA) consists of more than 1.2 million hectares of terrestrial, marine and coastal areas in far North Queensland, including parts of the Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Areas. Girringun rangers are working with Traditional Owners and broader Indigenous communities to maintain revegetation sites and reduce the intensity and severity of bushfires through cultural fire management.
